The Irish Sport of Hurling Print E-mail

Speed, danger, mud and excitement – the Irish sport of Hurling proves a great day out and worthy of its near-legendary status.

Hurling is a very popular sport in Ireland. For those of you who don't know what the game is about, it is very similar to hockey. Hurling involves a small ball and a wooden stick that is curved. The game originated in Ireland with the Celts at the end of the ice age and has been around ever since.

In this game, players can strike the ball on the ground, in the air and even hold it in their hurling stick while taking no more than four steps. Like hockey and soccer, the main objective is to get the ball into the opposing team’s goal. The goal is shaped and sized like a cross between a rugby goal and a soccer goal. One of the best things about hurling is that it is in season practically all year long because of all of the different levels the spot is played at. So no matter what season it is, you can pretty much always catch a hurling game.

If you're planning on holidaying to Ireland, make sure that you check out when and where there is a game for you to see. Even if you have never played watched or even heard of the game before (which, unless you’re Irish you probably haven’t!) it is a fun time for all, if sometimes a bit dangerous for the players involved.

There are endless beautiful hotels in Ireland which you can book with Expedia.ie for example and no matter which one you stay in, the front desk can help you find a game near you. Just remember, if you're planning a trip to Ireland, make sure you see a game of this unique and exciting sport.
